take it easy on them, they saved apple's ass in the 90's. if it weren't for them apple would have gone 'rupt. they also have to worry about a thousand different hardware configurations whereas os x 10 has to worry about the mac line.. give 'em a break. (not an ms fanboy)
yeah!
come to think of it, if it weren't for them and their illegal/immoral practices Apple would be at 90% and linux would be the underdog and there would be no Windows, so....
...errrr, hang on, what?

Yeah I called right before they closed also. The guy didn't have any solid knowledge of a shipment, but confirmed the 9am early open if they have ipad inventory.
I'll probably head over around 7:30... is that early enough?
It better not be raining!!!

Another HDD space junkie! :D I will buy 1 or 2 TB drives for the Mac Pro. However, what if I buy 1 TB drives and they puke before I fill them up?
Seriously, if you can't find a use for 1TB of space in 3 or 4 years, then you probably shouldn't be buying a MacPro.
Most photography apps don't need lots of cores (they just don't use them). The only appeal of a MacPro to a photographer is the expandability - lots of drives, interchangeable graphics cards. If you don't need the expandability, iMacs are much much better value machines.
If you're seriously worried about saving $30 by buying a slower 500GB drive instead of a faster 1TB drive, you're definitely wasting cash spending $3000 on a MacPro.
I am not being a smart @@S, just asking a legitimate question, as that scenario is my only concern. Also, thanks for clarifying that RAID is not for backup. my good friend uses RAID to backup, but he never writes to his drives, only reads. They are for storing tons of movies and games.
Is that right? How did the data get on to the RAID in the first place?
If your friend only has one copy of his files (on the RAID) then he doesn't have a backup. Backup = an alternate copy.
Not writing to that RAID doesn't make it magically safer... Your friend should get a backup if he's smart and he values his data.
Off-site storage is a big deal with photographers and I understand the benefits, but I never would have added 1+1. LOL
Not so funny when a thief breaks into your house and steals your Mac and the backup drive sat on the table next to it. Proper backups aren't just for professionals - they're for anyone who actually cares about keeping their data.
For someone with a $3000 Mac, a couple of hundred $ to buy enough disks to keep offsite copies is nothing.
I am still thinking about my backup plan, but I have plenty of options thanks to the photographer community! As I stated in my last reply, I will clear my mind this weekend and in all likelihood, order a new Mac Pro 8 core soon.
Sounds like you should be looking at an iMac.

I have an Xbox and a PS2, both on my home network, neither is modded in any way. Is there a way to use either of these puppies to Fold while I am not gaming? With new consoles around the corner (well, in the next year or so), I am less concerned about running the current ones into the ground. It'd be cool if they could at least be put to some use.

:D Haha, you guys are funny!
I like to think so. :)
Just wait for the releases by Otterbox and Switcheasy. Those will be your best bets.
Switcheasy has a silicone case, but they will most likely release a hard shell case in the future (I would assume, at least.)
Yes. I am currently in wait of a TRIM, Rebel, or Cara. Hopefully soon. :(

Anyone know if the UM computer showcase will have it on launch day? I like the apple store, but not enough to drop an extra $50. Yes, I'm a student.

Apologies if this has already been answered as I've ot had chance to trawl the forums yet but is the new battery life a result of new software or hardware?
Are us current 5g owners going to see an improvement with the new software?

That seems like a really cool program, especially if you are looking to create a gif from your favourite TV show, or something.
What are you wanting to do with the program, though? Because you could always pause the movie or video you are trying to cap from and press control+shift+4, this brings up a box which makes a cap of only the parts of the image that are selected, and conveniently saves it to your desktop.
I understand if you are trying something a little more complex, though, that this would be a tedious and inappropriate way of going about it. :)
thank you for your advice.

My macbook is starting to get slow every start up. I'm checking my Login Items and found these that I dont have any idea if its system related
StatusMenu (All Users)
CheckUpAlert
iTunesHelper
If I delete those would it mess up my system? And can there be another cause for it to start going slow?

Thanks. My Photoshop files are usually under 100Mb. I use Carrara for 3D work, which is 64-bit and works well with the multiple cores. Planning to switch to modo someday.
I guess I'll go for the 24Gb (4Gb x 6) and see how things work. I could do 8Gb x 3 to give me more flexibility, but the price difference is significant.
Follow-up question: OWC or TransIntl? I've been very happy with OWC in the past, but TransIntl is 15% cheaper and gets good reviews in this forum.

Funny thing about the new gawker media sites is that they pretty much lost a ton of their traffic after the switch to the new layout.

Fail design is fail.
Also ca.gizmodo.com works fine for me. But I prefer their RSS feed anyway.

This is going to be great. Everyone will love it. You know why? I love it. And I hate everything at first. :D
I think it would be a good time to say that maybe this thread isn't the best place for everyone to go nuts complaining about every little qualm they have, ie. the rollovers should be darker, or something silly like that.
Best of luck with the redesign.

Hi,
Please can someone clarify or help me to understand my situation :
On the 30 March, I placed a online order with Apple UK for Apple Care Plan and iMac (both to be shipped within 24h). Today, 31 March, I received a package from TNT UK, and that is only the Apple Care Plan.
Where is the iMac ?
I phoned TNT UK and they told me that they never picked up a iMac. I phoned Apple, and when explaining my situation, the guy suddenly said "And you did not receive your iMac ?" (sounded not surprised).
Apple is contacting TNT and TNT is contacting Apple, since, no answer from both sides.
Could it be that the iMac (stock model) is not shipping from UK so TNT UK cannot trace it ?

It's a tough call - there's a lot of debate out there over this, and I'm not sure there's a definitive answer. My 0.02 - if it's a good quality print and you're happy with the price you paid - I wouldn't worry too much one way or the other. I don't think anyone can be completely certain unless they got the print directly from Apple.
