    "american football" is the real football;

The follow-up to that statement is usually "soccer is for wimps"

It seems like the kind of situation they should be monitoring before it gets to be a problem. Or maybe they did, and that's why they were fixing it on the weekend. All in all, two hours was a small sacrifice. And now we have proof that MacRumors is one of the hottest sites on the Internet!

I've recently noticed that the download speed for Apple updates is much lower than what I've used to get in the past, which was normally an excelent performance.

As you can see below, this is not a problem related to my connection:

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/1192809291.png

For instance, when downloading the Java update yesterday and the iTunes update today, I got roughly 20% of my potential bandwidth...is anyone facing the same issue here in Europe or elsewhere?

I have had two diesel cars, and quite a few petrol cars. I don't profess to know a huge amount about the mechanical reasons for these, but here are a few of my thoughts. In actual day-to-day driving it is possible to notice you are driving a diesel. While this is not positive, it is only a niggling negative, and should not be enough to put you off. They are considerably noisier at low speeds, and do certainly rumble under foot on the clutch. I have experienced this with both a Volvo C30, Audi A4 and a VW Passat courtesy car. The problem I found most of all was the slow acceleration - you must physically wait for the turbo-charger to kick in before the car moves quickly. It is a strange feeling, but certainly you can live with it.

Fuel cost I have found to be around the same in the UK. While there is a slightly higher MPG on the diesel cars I've driven, the extra cost of the fuel offsets this so they are fairly similar. Other maintenance costs seem to be around the same.

I think it is unlikely I will get another diesel for several reasons.

I have a Mac+ still and there is no way I would sell it. I have sold a Mac IIvx and a G4 Quick Sliver but that was for Money to buy the next Mac (currently a G5 iMac). I gave my Rev-A iMac to a girl I dating at the time.... but I think that was because of her WoW factor.

They apologized, and sent me a new order yesterday.

I think part of the huge markup on the BSE skins and Zagg skins, and every other companies skins are out there, takes into account loss due to delivery. The Post Office is notorious for having poor delivery reliability or damages materials en route, so these companies just absorb that into their pricing.

It makes sense, I mean, really how much does it cost to mass produce these skins? They're charging anywhere from $20 - $40, for materials that cost maybe $3-$4 to mass produce.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my BSE skin, and think it's worth the price, but you should expect good customer service with such a huge markup.

The only thing worse than crappy cell phone companies would be someone that thinks the government could make it better. What motivation does the govt. have to make cell phone companies better? Votes. That's it. Votes. The only motivation that government has. So they'll promise you that they'll make it better. You'll vote for them. They'll spend money regulating whatever you think needs regulating. They'll create a branch that costs some upzillion dollars. Cell phone companies will be forced to comply with some ridiculous something or other. They'll up your bill by placing a charge on it called the "rsoo tax" to pay for it. The cell phone companies will all still treat you badly. Vote with your feet. Keep switching carriers. Don't blow your cash on idiotic features for idiotic prices. The companies will comply and compete for your business.

The cell companies lobbied HARD to not allow you to keep your number when you switch. The state legislature here (Calif) buckled 3 times.
You can thank "the government" for allowing you to keep your number when you switch. You can also thank "the government" for demanding that the companies improve their 911 protocols. People were sometimes
waiting 20 minutes to get connected. Also, blame "the government"
for requiring that the companies allow you a grace period to return your phone. They actually had to create a bill called "the cell phone bill of rights"
These actions did not create a huge costly layer of bureaucracy. Why do people think that corporations should be allowed to abuse people unhindered? After-all the market was/is not providing that many real choices. It's a cartel.
Bye the way, "the government" (in theory) is you.

Does the iPad sync both ways? For example, if I buy the camera connection kit and load pictures onto my iPad, when I connect it to my Macbook will sync go both ways, so the photos are added to my Macbook/not deleted from iPad?

(I'm buying one tomorrow.... soooooo pumped)

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I just saw this (http://xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct02/103002.html#S14660) article yesterday at XLR8yourmac.com

Info on Non-Pioneer Superdrive in recent iMac G4s (DVD-R/-RW plus DVD-RAM?) About a month or so ago I had heard that some new iMac G4s had non-Pioneer DVD-R/RW drives - a reader with one of these just sent an email with more info:

    " Hey Mike ...
Just wanted to let you know that Apple has changed the SuperDrive in the latest shipping iMacs. I just bought a 17" iMac LCD straight from Apple's Developer Connection (we're Select developers at work) and I was surprised to see that Mac OS 9.2.2's Apple System Profiler identified the drive as

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    DVD-R/CD-RW
    Driver version: 1.4.8
    Mac OS partitions: 0
    Removable media: Yes
    Vendor: HL-DT-ST
    Revision Number: D02D
    Product ID: DVD-RW GCA-4020B
    Apple disc burning: Supported
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending on who you believe, "HL-DT-ST" is either Hitachi or GoldStar in Korea - I'm not sure which.

A few Google searches revealed that this drive does DVD-R, DVD-RW *and* DVD-RAM! And, supposedly, the CD-R burning speeds are 12x, which is apparently faster than the previous Pioneer SuperDrives. (I can't personally verify this myself, not knowing the specs of the Pioneer A03/A04)
    (Pioneer DVR-104/A04 and 103/A04 have a 8x/4x max (CDR/CDRW) burn speed rating.-Mike)
The only place I could find on the Mac Web that mentioned this new development is a 5-day old article on MacWelt.DE, the German Mac site.
    Regards,
    - Greg E"

About a dozen readers wrote in reply to this post mentioning LG or Hitachi links, etc. - another iMac G4 owner sent info from the label on the drive:

"FYI, I'll read off the label on a superdrive taken out of 17" iMac delivered approx. 3 weeks ago (yep, I've opened the iMac to take a closer look):

    HL Data Storage
    CD-RW / DVD-R/RW DRIVE
    MODEL No. GCA-4020B
    DRIVE REV. A1

    manufactured SEPTEMBER 2002
    Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc.
    (...), Tokyo, Japan
    MADE IN JAPAN

I tried to look up tech. specs of this GCA-4020B on the web, but got nowhere so far.
    Cheers,
    Jan"

    Try the tips here: http://conzone.com/blog/2009/12/mating-a-dell-1110-laser-printer-and-mac-osx/

Never used that printer, so I can't vouch for the solution there, but it looks like good suggestions.

Upgrading RAM is quite easy. I don't know about PNY branded RAM, but I have heard good things of Crucial and Kingston RAM, I myself use CnMemory RAM in my 2009 MBP.

You'll want some guides to learn OpenGL, the graphics library many 2D games use.

recommend a good book? I enjoyed learning to draw and make the interaction of objects with maps and create effects eg smoke coming out of a tube ... know some tutorials or books to help me learn it?

ya, i guess PC stores can afford to sell cut price Windows machines in bulk, as they will sell tonnes, but Apple can't really sell as fast. Yet, if their machines were as cheap as Windows machines, then they would have more of a share of the market.

to bounce to its own track you can simply turn on the click, cycle your whole song, then either mute everything or solo nothing - so that when you hit play all you hear is your click. Then if you hit bounce (NOT bounce region!) you will bounce just what you are hearing, namely your click.

Then drag that from your audio bin onto a new track and do your edits...

So the article mentions backing up your Library as a new feature included in iTunes 7. I don't really see it anywhere, anyone know what they're talking about?

Obviously I could just copy the library and folder myself (since I keep the library consolidated), but it would be nice to know how to do this directly from iTunes.

I know someone who has an original iPhone 2G 8GB still sealed and may be willing to sell it. How do I tell if it's a refurb? Or if it's an early or late production model? The box shows all the old original icons and does not show the App Store or iTunes Store on it as an app.

I am thinking about buying it to collect (and leave it sealed) but I want to make sure it's something worth having.

By looking at the serial number on the back of the box, how do I tell if it's a refurb? What country was it sold in? When was it made? What information can I get from it?

No, I do not have the serial number at this time.

a dead giveaway for a refurb is 5K. I'm not too sure after that but that should help a little.

edit- if the serial on the phone matches the box, its the original.

my suggestion is, wait for the new SB MBA, the ultimate 13 MBA will get a price drop, i think it will be a very good deal, just wait 2 more months

it seems very unlikely we will see a mba refresh in 2 months it will be more realistically 6 months

I really don't think Apple will update the Air's with Sandy Bridge.

Here is why, the high resolution display (1440X900) will make the Intel graphics a major downgrade from the 320m in performance. I think the Air will get updated with the next MBP update (2012) and the 13" MBP and MBA become one with Ivy processors. Also at this time I expect the 15" and 17" MBP's to become "Air" like with SSD storage, thinner, and lighter.

I was holding out for the update, but came to this conclusion and made my purchase, which I couldn't be more satisfied with.

I may be wrong, but I would rather have the 320m if they do update it, the Thunderbolt is what will hurt if you use external drives..

To wipe your data and reinstall OS X: (this is what you'll want to do, so it's set up as if the new owner was buying a brand new mac)

Insert the OS X install disc
boot your mac while holding C
Go to utilities > Disk utility
Select your hard disk in the top left
    go to the erase tab
choose Mac OS X Extended (Journalled) and any name you want ("Macintosh HD" is probably preferable)
security options > Zero out data (only if you're paranoid about the new owner being able to recover your data, if not don't bother)
    erase
    then continue the install process

I dont have the option to go to Utilities. It goes right into OSX install. Should I continue the Mac OSX setup?
